Nau mai haeremai!

This year the Indigenous Mapping Wananga will be delivered as a four-day event which will explore Google, Esri, and Open Source geospatial tools.

The objective of the wananga is to promote and encourage the use of these digital mapping tools amongst Indigenous communities and their members so that they can create sustainable activities that promote and encourage rangatiratanga – “self determination”.

Today, more and more whanau, hapu, iwi and Indigenous communities are exploring the use of geospatial tools and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to realise the benefits that this technology can offer them. Possibilities are extensive! A few that we think would be useful in your community include, but are in now way limited too:

  • Storytelling and connecting people with their stories and oral traditions through the use of visual maps;
  • Managing and monitoring cultural assets on behalf of whanau, hapu and iwi;
  • Creating real time analysis on the health and wellbeing of the whanau, hapu, iwi;
  • Ensuring guardianship of matauranga Maori a whanau, hapu and iwi data integrity;

Digital Navigators Ltd and Te Kereru Associates are proud to partner with Waikato-Tainui tribal group, Google Earth Outreach and The Firelight Group Canada. We look forward to meeting you and sharing our korero and matauranga with you soon!
